People standing upon the barge lift construction in Niederfinw, waiting for a ship sailing into the gigantic water 'tank'. The Schiffshebewerk is one of the strangest structures in Germany. Set on the Oder-Havel Canal, this giant lift transports barges between the canal and the river in the Oder valley. The structure was opened in 1934 and stands 60 metres high, 94 metres long and 27 metres wide. It was an important addition to the canal network between Germany and Poland, replacing an antiquated system of locks.
